Kia Drive Mode Select: What It Does and How to Use It
When was the last time you climbed into an old car? I'm not talking about a 2009 Kia Soul or a 2011 Kia Sedona. I'm talking about a 1989 Toyota Camry or a 1971 Dodge Coronet. Even luxury vehicles from the pre-computer era seem positively Spartan compared to a modern base model subcompact car like the Kia Rio.
Modern vehicles are full of technology. This technology isn't just the stereo system, however.
When it comes to building vehicles which balance performance, comfort and fuel efficiency, automotive manufacturers have long realized the value of adding electronic control to the components of a vehicle that dictate and mitigate these traits.
As pioneers in the field of automotive technology and features, Kia have given a significant portion of their lineup a feature that turns your car into either a sports car, a luxury car or a fuel-efficient wonder. It's called Drive Mode Select.
What Is Kia Drive Mode Select?
Kia Drive Mode Select empowers you to choose the kind of drive you want. By letting you adjust automotive components like steering response, transmission RPM shift points (on automatic, DCT and IVT), throttle and even suspension in some cases, you're able to choose between several driving styles.
Among the types of drive mode offered by Kia Drive Mode Select, you may find the following:
ECO Driving Mode
By tightening shift points and lowering throttle, Kia's ECO drive mode gives you the best fuel efficiency your vehicle is able to achieve. The tradeoff? Engagement and quick acceleration.
SPORT Driving Mode
Unlike ECO, SPORT prioritizes driver engagement. For many vehicles, this will mean loosening shift points and letting you enjoy the higher RPMs. You'll also have tighter steering response and enhanced throttle to get the most out of your vehicle's powertrain. The tradeoff? Fuel efficiency and comfort (in models with adaptive suspension).

NORMAL Driving Mode
NORMAL driving mode seeks to balance the competing elements of your vehicle's drive by bringing all the sliders to the middle. With NORMAL driving, you'll get the best picture of how your vehicle functions when it's seeking to do everything okay. It's like picking Mario in Mario Kart. The tradeoff? None.
COMFORT Driving Mode
Models with adaptive suspension, like the 2019 Kia Stinger GT, have to balance being a luxury car and a performance car. While the Stinger is a great track-day companion, it can also be a great road-trip warrior. Putting a Kia like this in COMFORT mode allows you to enjoy a loosened suspension that will mitigate road imperfections. Additionally, the engine noise will also be less apparent in this mode as you cruise along in your stately and quiet Kia vehicle. The tradeoff? Driver engagement and sporty performance.
SMART Driving Mode
In compatible Kia vehicles, SMART driving mode monitors your driving throughout the day and changes based on when and under what conditions you are most likely to prefer one driving mode to the other. You may love COMFORT mode on your way to work, for instance, but want the thrill and quick pickup of SPORT mode on your way home.
CUSTOM Driving Mode
In compatible Kia vehicles, CUSTOM driving mode allows you to adjust these features yourself to find the perfect balance of comfort, fuel efficiency and performance. Vehicles like the Kia Stinger allow you to save this custom profile.
